On the Doppler distortion of the sea-wave spectra

چکیده
Discussions on a form of a frequency spectrum of wind-driven sea waves just above the spectral maximum continue during the last three decades. In 1958 Phillips made a conjecture that wave breaking is the main mechanism responsible for the spectrum formation. That leads to the spectrum decay ∼ ω−5, where ω is the frequency of the waves. There is a contradiction between the numerous experimental data and this spectrum. The experiments show decay ∼ ω−4. There are two general ways of the explanation of this phenomenon. The first one (proposed by Banner (1990)) takes into account the Doppler effect due to surface circular currents generated by long waves in the Phillips model. The second approach ascends to the work by Zakharov and Filonenko (1968). It is based on four-wave interactions in the kinetic equation and gives good agreement with the experimental data. In this article the contribution to the Phillips model due to the Doppler effect was examined. We considered the cases of isotropic and strongly anisotropic spectra. Both analytical results and numerical computations give us an evidence to state that the Doppler effect cannot explain the divergence of Phillips model with experimental data. Correspondence to: A. Numerical Simulation of Random Irregular Waves for Wave Generation in Laboratory Flumes
Understanding of wave hydrodynamics and its effects are important for engineers and scientists. Important insights may be gained from laboratory studies. Often the waves are simulated in laboratory flumes do not have the full characteristics of real sea waves. It is then necessary to present reliable methods of wave generation in wave flumes. In this paper, the results of numerically simulate...
متن کاملNormal pulsed wave Doppler echocardiographic parameters of Turkmen horses of Iran
Turkmen horse is one of the oldest and purest breeds in the world, but there is no information on Doppler echocardiographic parameters in this horse. In the present study, pulsed-wave (PW) Doppler echocardiography was performed on 42 clinically normal 3- to 15-year-old racing Turkmen horses. No cardiac disease was detected with two-dimensional (2-D) real-time, M-mode, and colour flow mapping. D...
متن کاملOpen Ocean Surface Wave Measurement Using Doppler Sonar
In October-November 1983, Doppler sonars mounted on the research platform Flip were used to scatter 75-kHz sound from the underside of the sea surface at low angle, as well as from the interior of the mixed layer. Surface gravity waves were seen in velocity estimates from the surface scattering sonar, even though the wave conditions were unusually calm. Valid measurements of sea surface motion ...
متن کاملMethods for the extraction of longperiod ocean wave parameters from narrow beam HF radar sea echo
This paper describes inversion methods for HF radar sea echo Doppler spectra, giving parameters of the ocean wave spectrum in the important long-wavelength region. Radar spectra exhibiting very narrow spikes in the higher-order structure adjacent to the first-order lines are indicative of ocean wave components with a single dominant wavelength. In the simplest method of interpretation these com...
